i have had the privilege and pleasure to see many cool places in the US as well as abroad with many more to come before I leave this world. But one of the coolest was staying in Fairbanks Alaska. It was January 10 2013 and it was -70 F and perfectly clear. The General Manager of the hotel called at 12:30 am to let me know that the Aurora Borealis would be putting on a show and to get dressed and bring a bathing suit. She drove three of us about an hour to Chena Hot Springs, had a drink at the Ice Hotel (yes it was closed) and then went into the Hot Springs, hence the bathing suit. So out we went -70 F, ran the 20 feet from the building to the springs and jumped in. Felt like 1000 degrees but with the cold ambient temperature it was quite comfortable. And while we were in the springs the Aurora starting dancing across the sky! It was so beautiful, I was in tears (not only from witnessing something so unbelievable, but the cold and heat). It feels like it happened yesterday.
